CROWDS WATCH SWITCH-ON
Published: 28th Nov 2009

YOU couldn't move in St Andrews town centre on Saturday afternoon (November 28) as the minutes ticked away before the annual festive lights switch-on. With everyone from Mother Goose to a brass band lending a hand and many shops opening late, there was a real party atmosphere.

Church Square was the focus of most of the action. However there were events scattered around the town which is also celebrating the Homecoming St Andrews Festival.

The Switch-on of the lights itself – in the presence of the cast of the Byre Theatre's 'Mother Goose' pantomime, Miss Teen Galaxy and the man in the red suit (Santa himself) - was at 5 p.m., at the corner of Church Square, looking down South Street. Trees and some shop fronts in South Street were illuminated along with the Square and Church Street and Bell Street.

There was story telling with Sheila Kinninmonth upstairs at bookshop J & G Innes Ltd on the corner of South Street and Church Street and street entertainers, Glasgow Science Centre Buskers. Also performing were the Alley Cats and the Tayport Instrumental Band.

For inner warmth and the price of a donation to Barnardos Save The Children Fund, you could choose spiced apple juice, ginger bread and mince pies.

Shops opened late and STAR radio kept shoppers entertained during the afternoon when parking headaches were reduced by the offer of limited free car parking at Madras College, in South Street.
