SEKHAR FOUNDATION BOSS INSISTS UNI WILL BE PAID
Published: 18th Feb 2010

AN ASIAN multi-millionaire yet to pay up any of the £8.25 million he pledged towards St Andrews University's new medical school, has said he intends to honour his promise.

Following media reports yesterday http://www.standrewsnews.co.uk/newsdetails.html?idn=259 a senior representative of the Malaysian philanthropist and entrepreneur, Vinod Sekhar, who promised the funding more than two years ago, contacted the university.

Riccardo Rovati, vice-president of corporate affairs with the Petra Group, of which Mr Sekhar is chief executive and president, confirmed that, despite the delay caused by the onset of the severe global economic downturn, the company would be proceeding with its gift to St Andrews University.

We are in constant touch with St Andrews on this gift, which we consider very important,” he said.

Vinod Sekhar's donation to the now-completed £45 million building in the university's North Haugh science complex, is intended as a memorial to his late father, Dr B.C. Sekhar, a pioneer of Malaysia's rubber and palm oil industries. The new school is intended to be named after Dr Sekhar.

However despite the Petra Group's own website advertising the St Andrews University scholarships the donation will offer young Asians, no money has yet been forthcoming.
