MARKET STREET WORK ON TARGET FOR AUGUST
Published: 2nd Jun 2010

WORK to the busiest shopping street in St Andrews is on target to start in late August this year, it has been confirmed.

Tender documents were issued last week to the six contractors and, depending on the delivery time for some of the stone, the project should go ahead as planned said Tim Masters of Fife Council's transportation team.

The successful contractor will be appointed next month.

Last year, draft plans for the multi-million pound Market Street upgrade which could open the door to traffic management, including pedestrianisation, went on public display, twice.

A planning application was approved by Fife Council's north east Fife area committee in March this year. See details at http://www.fifedirect.org.uk/uploadfiles/publications/c64_Item-04(06)-0901888FULL.pdf

Environmental consultants Ironside Farrar who undertook the consultation, said that while immediate pedestrianisation of Market Street was not proposed in the £3.6 million scheme, “flexibility has been developed to accommodate the opportunity for future change” in that direction.

Among the other proposals, are the relaying of cobbles to give a smoother walking surface and work to the ornamental Whyte Melville Memorial fountain to allow for its restoration.

The project was originally commissioned by Scottish Enterprise, but was suspended due to the withdrawal of its funding. Fife Council re-commissioned the project and has approved a further £1.6 million pounds from its capital budget for the scheme.

The authority has provided more support via other budgets to allow the upgrade to go ahead in the current financial year.

Said St Andrews Councillor William Sangster: “When you consider all the other projects which have been completed in St Andrews over the past six years or so, you could say that by upgrading Market Street we will be completing a really well-thought out plan of action. It has taken Transportation Officials many hours of meetings and public consultation with residents and local councillors to get to where we are today. I am sure that the finished work will enhance our historic town.”
