NO NATURIST BEACHES ANYWHERE IN FIFE Published: 11th Jun 2010
WHILE websites may say it's okay for naturists to use Kinshaldy beach near St Andrews, Fife Police yesterday made it clear that no beaches in Fife are designated for nudist or naturist activity.
Said PC Paul Buttercase, Community Safety Officer for north-east Fife: “During the investigation into two recent reported incidents of indecent exposure and behaviour in the Kinshaldy and Tentsmuir area, www.standrewsnews.co.uk/newsdetails.html we discovered that Kinshaldy is mentioned on numerous websites as being suitable for the naturist community and nude sunbathing.
“The beach area and Tentsmuir Forest are the responsibility of and maintained by the Forestry Commission Scotland. They have confirmed that the beaches in that area have never been designated as suitable for such a purpose.
“They promote this area as a family beach and the area is well used by families particularly during summer months.”
A Forestry spokesperson said the Commission was aware of the complaints and had volunteered to have Forest Rangers carry out more patrols in a bid to help police.
“This is a serious matter and we are determined to do what we can to ensure that this offensive sort of behaviour is stopped. Any incidents will be reported immediately to the police, who will deal with the matter appropriately.'
PC Buttercase stressed that police were in no way suggesting or inferring that the recent incidents of indecent behaviour reported on Kinshaldy Beach were connected to the nudist or naturist community.
“We are highlighting the fact that the area is not a designated naturist or nudist site to avoid members of that community reading otherwise elsewhere and attending at the beach only to find themselves the subject of a complaint of indecent exposure.
“With regard to those persons who may consider attending the area to carry out acts of indecency, I would highlight that the area is regularly patrolled by police officers and Forestry Commission Rangers, indeed I am aware that the Forestry Commission Rangers are to step up their frequency of patrols to support the Police activity in the area, and any person found in such circumstances will be dealt with appropriately and reported to the area Procurator Fiscal.
“Fife Constabulary and the Forestry Commission Scotland are committed to working together to ensure that this lovely area remains a safe and inviting place for families to enjoy.”
Anyone who has information about either of the incidents which took place or who witnesses any similar activity should contact Fife Constabulary on 0845 600 5702.
