HOLE IN THE WALL GANG TARGETS ST ANDREWS Published: 25th Jun 2010
ANYONE using 'hole in the wall' cashline machines in and around St Andrews is being warned to be on their guard against thieves.
Police have offered the advice this week after several customers reporting that their cards had been compromised and unauthorised transactions had been made after using an Automated Telling Machine (ATM) in St Andrews.
PC Paul Buttercase, Community Safety Officer for north east Fife told St Andrews News: “ This latest incident in St Andrews follows earlier incidences in other areas of Fife and further afield.
The following advice is important whenever using an ATM or carrying out a transaction with your debit or credit card”
-
Always cover the keypad with your hand whenever keying in your PIN
-
Always check the ATM before inserting your card. If there is ANY sign of a device having been fitted or something unusual about the machine report it to the Police and the premises in which the ATM is housed.
-
Make sure no-one is paying close attention to your use of the ATM and don't allow anyone to distract you whilst carrying out a transaction
-
If anything or anyone makes you feel uncomfortable whilst using the machine cancel the transaction and use a machine in another area.
-
Regularly check your account to make sure there are no unusual transactions and to detect any irregular use at an early stage
PC Buttercase added “ Anyone finding an ATM which appears to have anything jammed in the card slot and rendering it out of order should also report this to the premises involved and the Police. Be wary of using other ATM's in close proximity as this may be a method of 'herding' potential victims to the machine which has the skimming or cloning device attached.”
Anyone reporting a suspected device, or machine that has been tampered with, should immediately contact Fife Constabulary on 0845 600 5702.
