POLICE ON GETTING THE BEST FROM THE OPEN
Published: 6th Jul 2010

AS ST ANDREWS prepares to welcome the 150th Anniversary Open next week, police have urged people to work with them to ensure the event is remembered for all the right reasons.

The Fife force's planning team continues to fine tune plans and procedures in the run up to the event which will be held in the Home of Golf between July 15 and 18.

For almost a year officers involved have focused on making the whole Open Golf experience a very positive one, not only for those visiting and taking part but also for the people living in and around St Andrews.

An assessment of the impact such a prestigious event could have on the community in and around north east Fife and beyond has been carried out www.standrewsnews.co.uk/newsdetails.html by police and will serve as a model for other events when appropriate.

Superintendent John Pow (pictured) said: "St Andrews is a world class facility for links golf and the rural location adds to the spectacle. A whole range of people and organisations have been planning this event for a long time and we want to make it a truly memorable one for all the right reasons. Please work with us to make this a world class golf experience.”

Highlighting the fact that travel is crucial to the success of The Open, Superintendent Pow added: "Spectators coming to the town should consider their travel plans carefully and help is available on the website www.traveltotheopen.com. The rural location means that the roads network around the town will be very busy and patience will be key. Regular traffic updates will be provided to local radio stations and will also be posted on roadside signs.

The routes to the car parks are well sign-posted across east/central Scotland and motorists are urged to follow the posted routes and not rely on satellite navigation devices. Not bringing your sat nav may be a consideration, as its security during the day would be another complication for you to worry about.

Spectators are reminded that mobile telephones and cameras are not allowed on to the old course, and you need to consider what you will do with your phone. Secure storage facilities are available, but again it might be easier not to bring it. With this in mind I would ask you to arrange a meeting point in case someone in your party becomes separated.

“St Andrews has a low crime rate, but there will always be those who will see people enjoying themselves as an opportunity to commit crime. Please be on your guard against this. Crime prevention and safety tips are available on the Fife Constabulary website www.fife.police.uk.”

Superintendent Pow added, " I am encouraged by the response the we are getting to our plea that by working together we will have a great Open Golf Championship. My officers are there to help you maximise your safety so please speak to them if you require their assistance.”
