THREE of the world's greatest golfers have been honoured by Scotland's oldest university in the week when all eyes are on the 150th anniversary Open Championship at St Andrews
Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Padraig Harrington were awarded Honorary Degrees by the University of St Andrews in a public ceremony in the town's Younger Hall today (Tuesday) July 13.
Between them they have won 18 major championships, including nine Open Championship titles, over the course of the last half century.The university awarded each of them the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa in recognition of their achievements and outstanding contributions to the game of golf.
The degrees were conferred by university Chancellor Sir Menzies Campbell.
Geoff Morris, Director of Special Projects at the university of St Andrews told St Andrews News: "Individually and collectively, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Padraig Harrington exemplify excellence, drive and achievement at the highest levels of professional sport.
“We are determined to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy this opportunity to honour their achievements. That is why we are delighted to announce that this memorable event will be available to watch live and free on our website.”
Jim Farmer (pictured bottom right at the ceremony with Harrington, Palmer and Watson diagonally behind him) has enjoyed a hugely influential career as a player, coach and administrator. To many in St Andrews, where he grew up and still lives, he is: 'Mr Golf'. He has coached and mentored generations of amateurs and professionals.
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club's honorary professional was recognised for his outstanding contributions to his home town of St Andrews and to the game of golf. The University of St Andrews awarded the highly-regarded Scottish golfer the University Medal in recognition of his lifetime achievements.
An international audience watched the historic Graduation ceremony, with golf fans travelling from as far afield the US, Canada and Bermuda to attend. The event was shown live on the University of St Andrews website at:http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/golfgraduation/
