GOLD MEDAL HAT TRICK FOR STEP ROCK SWIMMERS Published: 16th Jun 2010
ST ANDREWS swimmers were again in competitive action over the weekend. A team of 10 swimmers from the Step Rock club took part in The Stars of the Future gala held at the Olympia Pool Dundee and brought home three gold medals, a silver, four fourth places and two other final positions.
Performance of the day on this occasion goes to Emma Sharratt (pictured) who collected two gold medals in the 50 metres butterfly and 50 metres freestyle in the age 10 group, lowering her personal best times by four seconds in the butterfly to 39.34 seconds and over a second in the freestyle to 34.30 seconds.
As expected in this most competitive age group at Step Rock, Emma didn’t have it all her own way, being beaten into the silver position by friend and team-mate Beth Constance in the 100 metres individual medley. In taking the gold medal, Beth made it an impressive one-two for the club. Again, both girls had to better their personal bests against strong opposition and a very tight finish.
Beth also narrowly missed out on more medals, achieving three excellent fourth place finishes in the 50 metres breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle, with Emma placing sixth in the breaststroke and eighth in the backstroke. Their other sparring partner at club level Caitlin Sparks, having already reached the age of 11, had to swim in the higher age group in this particular event but still managed another personal best time to place sixth in the 100 individual medley and fourth in the 50 metres breaststroke.
Others in the group also did well at individual level, with Callum Sharratt securing a reserve final place in the age 12, 100 metres breaststroke, while Lucy Stewart (100 metres backstroke and 100 metres freestyle), Ellenor Waddell (100 metres freestyle and 100 metres individual medley) Stefan Baldacchino (50 metres backstroke) all achieved personal best times.
Finally, a mention to the superb team effort of the relay squad of Lucy, Stefan, Caitlin, Beth, Tristan Rees and Callum, who each swam superbly for their team to finish in third place only to be disqualified for the closest of flying starts on the last leg. It was a massive disappointment for the swimmers, but one from which they should take great heart as they finished behind only Dundee City Aquatics and Aberdeen Dolphins - both much bigger clubs than Step Rock.
