GOLFING TRADITIONS ESTABLISHED IN MEMORY OF IAN Published: 19th Jun 2010
THE Inaugural Ian Wilson Memorial Salver match took place in St Andrews on Thursday (June 17) over the Jubilee Course. Played between the committees of The St Andrews Golf Club and The St Andrews Thistle Golf Club, the Salver was donated and presented by Ian's daughter Louise.
Ian was a long-serving member of both clubs and Louise (pictured here with Alex Lorimer, Captain St Andrews Golf Club and winning Captain, Forbes Stephen, of St Andrews Thistle Golf Club) felt it would be a fitting tribute to her late father if the two clubs could compete for a trophy bearing his name.
Alex Lorimer warmly remembered participating in many sporting activities with Ian throughout their 60 year friendship. While many present were aware of Ian's sporting prowess, several were taken aback to hear that Alex used to accompany him to the gym in their youth. Alex did point out that this was a very long time ago.
Forbes Stephen graciously accepted the Salver on behalf of his winning team. He thanked Louise for her generosity in donating the trophy and said it was a great honour for The St Andrews Thistle Golf Club to be the initial winners of Ian Wilson Memorial Salver. Forbes also thanked his team for their efforts in delivering such a decisive result, winning three matches and halving one match and concluded by saying he was looking forward to competing for the Salver in the years to come.
The match was followed by pie, chips 'n beans in the St Andrews Golf Club upper lounge, a fitting meal which will be served after each match for many years to come.
