ON THE first day of competition for the Open Championship at the Home of Golf, the weather was forgotten as player after player produced shots that sizzled onto the greens at the Old Course.
Out in front with an amazing nine under par score is Northern Ireland sensation Rory McIlroy (pictured today), two ahead of South African Louis Oosthuizen.
This season's sartorial sensation John Daly may have broken new ground in his very own style stakes, but the American past champion had to settle for a very creditable tied third place in today's first round, joining Scot Andrew Coltart, England's Steven Tiley, Wales' Bradley Dredge and Sweden's Peter Anson on six under.
Tiger Woods meanwhile was among a clutch of players who tied for eighth place on five under. Those were: Marcel Sien (Ger); Nick Watney, Lucas Glover, Sean O'Hair (all USA); Frederick Andersson Hed (Sweden); Alejandro Canizares (Spain), Korea's YE Yang and England's Lee Westwood
